2011 Jeep Wranglers are mechanically unchanged from 2010, with a 3.8-liter V-6 engine and six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is standard on all but Unlimited models equipped with the automatic.
In the interior, there are welcome improvements. The new Wrangler has a new steering wheel, instrument panel, reworked center stack, and even larger rear windows. Other changes include a lockable console, gooshier armrests and upgraded materials all around.
On the creature-feature front, there's a new USB interface for keeping those top-down tunes flowing, as well as Bluetooth streaming audio, a 110-volt power outlet and optional heated power mirrors. The interior also has more sound-dampening to reduce road, mud or rock noise, depending on where you like to roll with your Jeep.
Finally, new paint colors make the scene for 2011, including Bright White, Cosmos Blue, Deep Cherry Red, Detonator Yellow, and Sahara Tan. The optional hardtop for Sahara trim levels is now body-colored, for a more cohesive exterior look.
The available Freedom Top™ three-piece modular hardtop lets you air-dry your hair on the way to work. The fiberglass hardtop allows for easier handling and storage by separating into three manageable pieces. Without the two front panels, the back of the hardtop becomes much easier for two adults to remove.
Jeep® Wrangler interiors have come a long way since their inception over 65 years ago. What makes them so unique? Perhaps it's the fact you can hose it down if it gets too dirty. Standard vinyl trimmed seats make for easy clean up in such a case. Available two-tone stain resistant cloth seats with available driver height adjuster provide the driver a comfortable seating position to crank up the view. Behind the available leather wrapped steering wheel resides a large premium instrument cluster sporting available compass and temperature displays available stylish cloth seats with YES Essentials® protectant endure wear and stains while giving you a ride that rivals any SUV in comfort.
For 2011 the overall layout is the same, with exposed screw heads and a passenger-side grab handle—now bearing a "Jeep, Since 1941" plaque—but the materials have been thoroughly modernized. The center stack now has a smoother, cleaner layout with chrome-ringed vents and up-to-date climate-control knobs. There's a new three-spoke steering wheel that incorporates cruise and audio controls, and a refreshed instrument cluster. Soft-touch materials appear on the center console (now lockable) and redesigned armrests. Two-tone interiors are also available.
Jeep® Wrangler flexes its versatile muscle. You can never have too much cargo storage, especially when owning a Jeep Wrangler or Wrangler Unlimited. With the rear seats folded forward you'll get 56.5 cubic feet on Wrangler and 82 cubic feet of total cargo volume on Wrangler Unlimited. Jeep Wrangler two-door's removable rear Fold and Tumble seatback offers a spacious 61.2 cubic feet of cargo room at your command.
Get the ultimate unobstructed view while on the trail. Wrangler’s fold-down windshield flips down just like the original, but is now curved for optimized aerodynamics and reduced wind noise.
With the available MyGIG® Multimedia System with GPS Navigation, you'll always know how to get where you're going and you can take your favorite music, photos and DVDs along for the ride. Find your destination and avoid traffic jams using GPS navigation with turn-by-turn route guidance and real-time traffic reporting via SIRIUS (one year of service provided by SIRIUS).
These systems rock! Standard sound systems on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited feature an AM/FM stereo CD player with auxiliary jack and six-speaker design. An upgraded available Infinity® Sound System has seven speakers, including a subwoofer, and a 368-watt amplifier to pump out the jams. An exclusive overhead sound bar features two 6.5-inch mid-range speakers for the ultimate in highway or off-road driving sound. Have all your favorite music stored on MP3 files? No problem. Simply connect your MP3 player directly into the auxiliary stereo input jack and relax in comfort.
Get the power you need, contained in Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited's 3.8-liter overhead valve 60-degree V6 engine. Its cast-iron construction provides robust performance and durability—with 202 horsepower and 237 lb.-ft. torque. Now maintaining higher torque at speeds above 3400 rpm, allowing for an expanded operating range. Front and rear electronic locking differentials lock power and distribute it evenly between the wheels for the ultimate in traction. The instrument panel-mounted rocker switch can lock either the rear or both axles (standard on Rubicon, rear only locker available on X).
The Rock-Trac® two-speed transfer case meets the demanding durability requirements of an intense off-road vehicle. A 4:1 low-gear ratio allows Wrangler Rubicon to crawl at a lower speed but with greater increase in torque at the wheels. In turn, making it easier to trek over large rocks and timber. Standard on Rubicon models.
The second-generation Command-Trac® unit is standard equipment on four-wheel-drive models (except Rubicon). When four-wheel power is required, off-roading or slick conditions where more traction is required, Command Trac® kicks into action delivering equal power to all four corners getting through the rough stuff with ease.
The standard Electronic Stability Program is designed to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicles during extreme steering maneuvers. ESP senses when a vehicle is starting to loose control, and attempts to correct the vehicle's course by automatically controlling the throttle and applying the brakes at individual wheels.
Rubicon has an incredible 73.3:1 crawl ratio, allowing for a controlled 0.5 mph cruise up the rocks. High crawl ratios keep you slow for more control on the rock. The crawl ratio is the combined first gear x low range x axle ratio. The higher the number, the slower the vehicle will go. And driving slowly is the key to successful off-road driving, especially over rocks and rugged terrain. You’ll be able to see what they are driving over and tiptoe over obstacles with controlled authority.
Dana 44 heavy-duty axle's - the price of admission to hard-core trails. The next-generation axle's above-center mounting (of the driveshaft) aids ground clearance, adds strength, and reduces driveshaft joint angles for smooth and quiet operation. The housing is stiffer and stronger, and the pinion bearings are larger to handle high torque requirements.
Jeep® Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited have earned the U.S. Government's highest rating for frontal-impact crash testing – five stars. You'll also feel reassured knowing both passive and active features, such as advanced front multistage air bags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and antilock brakes (ABS), have been designed to help keep you safer and more secure during your on and off-road adventures.
Popular Mechanics magazine crowns the 2008 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon with an Automotive Excellence Award for Off-Road Ability. According to PM's Ben Stewart, "On extreme off-road trails the Jeep's systems work together so well, it's almost like cheating. This is simply the gold standard of four-wheel drive."
Jeep Wrangler also received prestigious honors from a publication that knows a thing or two about four-wheeling: Four Wheeler magazine. Last year, the magazine for four-wheel enthusiasts named Jeep Wrangler Rubicon a “Best Buy in 4WD” for the fourth consecutive year. It also named Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon the Editor’s Pick—Best Overall.
